1. About PUFC

Print Utility for Citrix XenApp is software to enhance the print driver designed to work within the Citrix XenApp/Citrix XenDesktop/Windows Terminal Services environments.
XenApp Server in the Citrix XenApp environment, virtual desktop in the Citrix XenDesktop environment and terminal server in the Windows Terminal Services environment will be collectively referred to as Server in this guide.

Print Utility for Citrix XenApp is a succeeding product of Print Utility for MetaFrame.
While the products will be collectively referred to as Print Utility for Citrix XenApp in this guide, 3.6.0 and previous versions refer to Print Utility for MetaFrame.

2. Function of PUFC

This software is installed and used in both client and server.
Moreover, it is necessary to install it in the print server when the printer on the client is a shared printer on the network and when using the auto created client printer.
(However, this is applicable only when using the compression function of the print data and the recording function of the document name to the print log, as described below.)

2.1 Reflecting print driver settings in the auto created client printer

It reflects the various settings of the print driver on the client in the auto created client printer of the server.
As a result, you can print with the settings already configured at the client, such as the device option structure and the print settings.

2.2 Compressing print data

It compresses the print data generated by the auto created client printer at the server, and then sends to the client.
As a result, you can print with fewer bands than before.
The compression of the print data can obtain a high-quality print result as in the past with lesser data volume as it uses a compression method without image quality deterioration.

Print Utility for Citrix XenApp will judge whether to compress print data based on whether the band limit of printing is set on each server.
This judgment is done when Print Utility for Citrix XenApp is installed on the XenApp server.
When the band limit of printing is set, the print data is compressed by the server.
On the other hand, when the band limit is not set, the print data is not compressed.

Also, you can manually configure whether or not to compress print data without depending on the judgment result of the band limit when the above-mentioned is installed.
This configuration is done by editing fxmfopte.ini, which is installed in the system directory of the server.

- 1) In order to compress print data

[Option]
Compress=1

- 2) In order not to compress print data

[Option]
Compress=0

Cautions and Restrictions

1: In default configuration for installation in the environments of Citrix XenDesktop, Citrix XenApp 7.6/7.14/7.15/7.16/7.17 and Windows Terminal Services, print data is always uncompressed.
To compress print data, you need to edit fxmfopte.ini manually.
2: If the administrator data that is input when installing in the server, is different from the administrator of the client and the print server, this function may not become effective.
Also, administrator rights are not needed for the login user to the client.
3: When the printer on the client is a shared printer on the network and is using the auto created client printer, it is necessary to install Print Utility for Citrix XenApp in the print server too.
4: When judging the band limit of printing, policy setting such as Citrix Presentation Server 4.0 and above is disregarded.
5: This feature is effective when both server and client are Windows 2000 or above.
6: When the client printer is connected to the device by the SMB port, the print data is not compressed by this printer.

2.3 Recording document name in print log

Up to now, printing with the auto created client printer will result in a fixed document name.
For example, the document name recorded as printer log will become "Citrix ICA Remote Job".
As a result, there was a security problem of not knowing which document was printed. When using Print Utility for Citrix XenApp, the document name will be recorded accurately.
When the document name recorded in the printer is not changed (always the same document name), edit fxmfopte.ini that is installed in the system directory of the server as follows.

[Option]
DocuName=1

Cautions and Restrictions

1: If the administrator data that is input when installing in the server, is different from the administrator of the client and the print server, this function may not become effective.
Also, administrator rights are not needed for the login user to the client.
2: When the printer on the client is a shared printer on the network and is using the auto created client printer, it is necessary to install Print Utility for Citrix XenApp in the print server too.
3: This feature is effective when both server and client are Windows 2000 or above.

2.4 Automatic upgrading of client module

When using the latest version of the Print Utility for Citrix XenApp, you can perform automatic upgrading on the server side.
This function is only applicable if the “Print Utility for Citrix XenApp” on both the server and the client sides are Ver. 2.0.0. or above. If the client side is Ver. 1.x, automatic upgrading will fail.

Network Administrators of the server can customized the upgrade method used for their clients. Listed are the 3 options available.

- 1) Client Upgrade options (default)

When automatic upgrading is used, the following messages appears on the client side upon login to the server:

"The version of the latest Print Utility for Citrix XenApp can be upgraded. Do you want to upgrade?"

Click the "yes" button to perform the upgrade.
Click the "No" button to avoid the upgrade.
Restart Windows for validating new version of the Print Utility for Citrix XenApp.
The manager can automatically upgrade the client side utility by editing the fxmfopte.ini installed on the system directory of the server as follows:

[Option]
VerUp=1

- 2) Method for implicit upgrading

Execute the upgrade without displaying the messages on the client side.
Restart Windows to validate the upgraded Print Utility for Citrix XenApp.
The manager can automatically upgrade the client side utility by editing the fxmfopte.ini installed on the system directory of the server as follows:

[Option]
VerUp=2

- 3) Method for prohibiting automatic upgrading

Do not perform automatic upgrading of the Print Utility for Citrix XenApp on the client side.
The manager can prohibit automatic upgrading by editing the fxmfopte.ini installed on the system directory of the server as follows:

[Option]
VerUp=0

It is recommended that each client should upgrade the version of the Print Utility for Citrix XenApp on the client side.

* Cautions and Restrictions

1: In case that the client is Windows 2000 or later and a user logs on with the user right, to enable the automatic upgrading feature, status of Secondary Logon Service (Windows 7/8.1/10/Windows Server 2008/2008 R2/2012/2012 R2/2016) needs to be "Started" on the server and client at the same time.
2: In case that the client is Windows 7/8.1/10 and User Account Control (UAC) is effective, even if "Method for implicit upgrading" on the above is executed, a message to confirm installer execution is displayed.
3: In case that the client is Windows 7/8.1/10 and User Account Control (UAC) is effective, after clicking the "Yes" button of "Client Upgrade Options", a message to confirm installer execution is displayed. Continue the installation by clicking "Allow" on the displayed message or by entering a password for an administrator on the message to click "OK".
4: Only when the version of Print Utility for Citrix XenApp on client is upgraded from 3.x or previous versions to 4.x or above by the automatic upgrading feature, Print Utility for Citrix XenApp does not work normally in the Windows Terminal Services environment.
For use in the Windows Terminal Services environment, Print Utility for Citrix XenApp Ver4.x or above needs to be normally installed on client in advance.

2.5 Change of default value by Network administrator

After client setting is reflected, the default values can be changed as specified by the manager for the following items for each printer model.

- Color mode
- Resolution of the printer driver

This function is effective when reducing the size of printing data.
The size of the printing data output by the printer driver can be reduced by setting the resolution lower or setting the printer to print in black and white mode on a colour printer.
The manager can validate this function adding the following description to the fxmfopte.ini installed on the system directory of the server.
No settings are necessary on the client side.

[FX DocuPrint C2428]
ColorMode=MONO
Resolution=300

[FX DocuPrint 340A-AP]
Resolution=200

In the above example, the first 3 lines will set the defaults value for the color mode to black and white and for the resolution to 300dpi for all automatically generated FX DocuPrint C2428 client printers. The last 2 lines will set the default resolution to 200dpi for all automatically generated FX DocuPrint 340A-AP client printers.

For fxmfopte.ini, the above setting can be described for multiple models.
* Select the "server property" from the file menu of the printer folder and use the driver tab to confirm the printer model name.

The ColorMode key corresponds to the "color mode" of the printer driver and the Resolution key to the "resolution of the printer driver."
The following values can be set for the ColorMode and Resolution.

ColorMode Resolution
AUTO
COLOR
MONO
AUTO
600
300
200

The values that can be set for the ColorMode and Resolution depend on the model and version of the printer driver installed on the server.
Open the printing setting of the printer driver and check the values that can be set, and then edit fxmfopte.ini.

Cautions and restrictions

1: Setting cannot be performed for each user or printer icon.
2: If any prohibited value is set (such as color setting for a monochrome printer), the setting is ignored.

This step is the same on all operating systems, servers, and clients.

Run installe.exe as administrator.

When installing in the server, a dialog box for entering the administrator data is displayed.
Here, enter the user name, password, and domain of the administrator.
If nothing is entered in the domain column, the current server name is used.

In the Citrix XenApp/Citrix XenDesktop environments, if you cancel the operation without entering the administrator data, only functions reflecting the print driver settings will function normally.

In the Windows Terminal Services environment, you have to enter Built-in Administrator data of server in the administrator data field.
If Built-in Administrator data is not entered, Print Utility for Citrix XenApp will not work normally.

When the following message appears after installation, restart the system for the function to take effect.

"Installation of Print Utility for Citrix XenApp(TM) has completed.
Restart your computer for the installation to take effect."

If restarting is not required, the following message will be displayed.

2: This installation package runs in the client environment described in 3.1 Server and client environment only.
3: The printer driver package, which can be added is "PCL printer driver package with Driver Installation Tool" or "Setup package created by Setup Disk Creation Tool".
4: The settings of "setup without displaying the screen" and "execution by the general user" are applied only when Print Utility for Citrix XenApp (TM) is installed.
Printer driver installation is based on the settings of printer driver installer.

4.5 Precautions

- 1) Re-installation is required if the ICA client has been re-installed or upgraded.

- 2) In the Citrix XenDesktop environment, the software needs to be installed on virtual desktop after Citrix Virtual Desktop Agent was installed.
If the software is installed first, it will not work on client.
In such case, the software needs to be reinstalled.

- 3) Even if you enter the user name, password, and domain name of the administrator correctly at the installation in server, the message, "Any of the entered user name, password or domain name is incorrect. Please try again." may be displayed.
In this case, there is a possibility the following services are not available for the server.
  -Windows Server 2008/2008 R2/2012/2012 R2/2016/Windows 7/8.1/10: Secondary Logon
The above services need to be started on the server and client to use Automatic upgrading feature.

- 4) With the use of Citrix Universal Printer Driver and Terminal Services Easy Print, the software is disabled.
(Note) On Windows Server 2008/2008 R2/2012/2012 R2/2016, Terminal Services Easy Print is set as prior use for standard settings.
If Remote Desktop Connection on client is version 6.1/6.2/6.3, set "Use Terminal Services Easy Print printer driver first" to "Disabled" by the group policy settings of the connected server.

6.3 Limitations based on the specifications of OS and applications

In the Citrix XenApp/Citrix XenDesktop/Windows Terminal Services environments, the following events occur depending on the specifications of OS and applications.

(3)-1. The settings may not be reflected if the printer model of a certain printer is changed.[XenApp/XenDesktop/TerminalServices]

For example, if you logged in to the server and logged out after DocuPrint C2428 has been installed as "Printer 1" and later changed the print driver of "Printer 1" to DocuPrint 340A-AP, the settings will not be retained when you log in again.

(3)-2. The settings may not be retained if an published application other than the desktop application is started up.[XenApp]

This happens when the application is started earlier than the automatic creation of the printer.
This can be avoided by using the following method.
* Restart the published application.

(3)-3. Although the print settings are reflected during the login session but the settings are not reflected when verified on the server.[XenApp]

As the respective login sessions are different, sometimes the updated settings cannot be verified when you logged in as "local" to the server.

(3)-4. If multiple printers are automatically created using the same printer type, the settings may not be correctly reflected when the printer is selected from Excel.[XenApp/XenDesktop/TerminalServices]

If the difference in the printer names happens after the 32nd byte, then Excel will not be able to identify the printer difference and the settings of another printer may be displayed.

(3)-5. Settings may not be retained when the print driver of the server is upgraded. In addition, even if the settings were changed after you have logged in, the updated contents will not be saved.[XenApp/XenDesktop/TerminalServices]

In this case, perform the following operation to resolve the problem.
1. Change the printer name of the client.
2. Once again, log in to the server.

(3)-6. If the client is Windows 7/8.1/10 and User Account Control (UAC) is effective, you cannot perform automatic upgrading of client module implicitly.[XenApp/XenDesktop/TerminalServices]

Refer to "2.4 Automatic upgrading of client module"

(3)-7. If the server is Windows Server 2008 and User Account Control (UAC) is valid, Compressing print data/Recording document name in print log feature is not available. [XenApp/XenDesktop]

This can be avoided by either one of the following methods.
- Enter Built-in Administrator data of the server in the administrator data field in the process of installing on the server.
- Edit fxmfopte.ini installed in the system directory of the server as follows to make "UAC dialog display" effective, and then authorize rise in right in the UAC dialog displayed at login.

** How to make UAC dialog display effective
   [Option]
   ShowUACDlgSrv=1

(3)-8. If the server is Windows Server 2008/2008 R2/2012/2012 R2/2016 and User Account Control (UAC) is valid, Print Utility for Citrix XenApp may not function.[TerminalServices]

When User Account Control (UAC) of the server is valid, Print Utility for Citrix XenApp may not function depending on the specifications of Windows Terminal Services.
To make it function normally, disable UAC.

(3)-9. If the print driver was not installed through "Run as administrator" on the server, the settings may not be carried over. [TerminalServices]

In the Windows Terminal Services environment, if the print driver was not installed through "Run as administrator" on the server, the printer settings may not be carried over normally due to the effect of UAC feature.
In such case, uninstall the print driver and install it again through "Run as administrator" to make it operate normally.

(3)-10. Print Utility for Citrix XenApp will not function on the Auto Created Client Printer after a session is reconnected. [TerminalServices]
In the Windows Terminal Services environment, if a session is disconnected, the Auto Created Client Printer will be deleted, and when the session is reconnected, it will be created again.
On the regenerated Auto Created Client Printer, Print Utility for Citrix XenApp does not function.
This feature will return to a normal operation by logging in again.

6.4 Condition that print data is not compressed

Refer to "2.2 Compressing print data".

6.5 Condition that document name is not correctly recorded

Refer to "2.3 Recording document name in print log".

6.6 Condition that client module is not automatically upgraded

Refer to "2.4 Automatic upgrading of client module" and "4.4 Precautions".
Moreover, depending on the network band, time may be required to transmit the upgraded data and failure may occur due to time-out.
When that happens, execute the upgrading on the client.

7. Troubleshooting

If the settings of the client printer cannot be reflected correctly on the auto-created printer, use the procedure below to correct the problem.

7.1 Check the following

- Is this the environment described in the Prerequisites?
- Is this software installed on the client and server?
- Are the models and versions of the print drives same as that of the target printers?
- Have you checked the limitations?

7.2 Do the following

- Re-install Print Utility for Citrix XenApp.
- Try to change the client printer name.
- Try to update the print driver version of the server and client to the newest.
- Try to end the published application and then restart.
